The Sandman – A Poem

When people hear the word Sandman, they think of either an old man wearing a night-gown or in the horror movie monster Freddy Kruger. Aside from Freddy Kruger, there were other films mentioning the being exploring both the positive and negative aspects to his powers. Some even believe that those that refuse to fall asleep gain punishment from him. The punishment seems quite extreme for a man who shapes your dreams, for those that refuse to sleep would fall victim to having their eyes removed, thus forcing them to endure an endless cycle of nightmares.

The Sandman is a paranormal being that travels through the night placing humans and animals into sleep. The residue people find in their eyes upon waking is a sign that a person visited by him. Most depictions of media depict the residue as white sand, something pure that can tie back to the Sandman. Not much is known about the magical properties of sand used to shape dreams or the limitations it could exist aside from lulling beings to his realm of slumber and dreams.

On Morpheus bidding I visit those on the verge of sleep. Sprinkling particles of sand, luring them to their inner dreamscape. A time of peace from the terrors of the waking world.

The poem reflects the abilities that the Sandman possesses. Many know that he uses dreams and to put people to sleep allowing his sand to shape the dreams inside their head. Dreams create an escape from the stress and chaos that deal with allowing the person a chance to recharge and face a new day. That dreams allow the dreamer to deal with stress and conflicts they face at work and in relationships. Allowing their dreams to create a solution to the problem at hand.

Furthermore, people see the Sandman as a positive being that is a symbol of happiness and purity. Few wishes to see the negative aspects of this paranormal being or consider that there is a darker aspect to his personality. Many enjoy the idea of a person bringing us dream hoping to forget that with dreams there is nightmares. Forgetting that everything in life needs balance including the mystical world in our heads made from sand.

Now, shush, I’m trying to read. Luna
