Luna was the first to introduce me to the book series of Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. I was sold on the idea of possessing magic and even more excited of the existence of a school for wizards. During middle school I was beginning to lose my sight and had lost interest in reading, so having a book Luna and I enjoyed helped me find a new love for reading. Despite the series being set in a fantasy realm the scenery come from inspirations from London, England.
In Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire by J.K Rowling, Harry Potter is midway through his training as a wizard and his coming of age. Harry wants to get away from the pernicious Dursleys and go to The International Quidditch Cup. He wants to find out about the mysterious event that’s supposed to take place at Hogwarts this year.
The Triwizard Tournament is an event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn’t happened for a hundred years. Harry wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. But unfortunately for Harry Potter, he’s not normal even by wizarding standards. And in his case, different can be deadly.
The Golden Egg Harry must decipher a riddle hidden inside of a golden egg. The riddle serves as a hint of what the second test in The Triwizard Tournament will be. Moaning Myrtle, a ghost, tries to help Harry understand the riddle wanting him to win the tournament.
“Come seek us where our voices sound, We cannot sing above the ground, And while you’re searching, ponder this: We’ve taken what you’ll sorely miss, An hour long you’ll have to look, And to recover what we took, But past an hour – the prospect’s black Too late, it’s gone, it won’t come back.” -Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K Rowling
Despite Harry’s intellect it does take him a few moments to figure out that the clue is hinting at mermaids. He is teased for being slow and failing to figure the riddle out faster. To be fair, he has never seen a mermaid, so he didn’t understand the reference until it was spelled out to him.
The mermaid’s colony is in the black lake located on the castle grounds of the school. They only speak mermish which only the headmaster of the school seems to be able to speak. In the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, mermaids are considering to be beasts. Like centers thy understand the human language but wish for their society to be separated from wizard allowing them to govern their own kind.
My Opinion I always find myself enjoying the film adaption of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire compared to the rest of the books in the series. It’s more entertaining to visible witness a Triwizard tournament as compared to what you see as the reader imagine while reading it.

It was interesting to see that J.K. Rowling went with the mermaid traits when explaining what they were. It reminds me more of a siren than what society thinks of when they hear mermaids being mentioned. Visually the mermaids look like they are depicted in folklore, of being beautiful maids, a human beauty with scales and a fish tail with a luring voice.
